100 years ago In 1914, Graniterock expanded its quarry operations with the purchase of 151 acres from Henry F. Blohm. The property, a section of the Jesse D. Carr subdivision, was once a part of the Mexican land grant Rancho Los Aromitas y Agua Caliente, which was owned by Policronio Estolastico de Guadalupe Anzar. This is where the A.R. Wilson Quarry crushing plants, offices and shops are now located.

The siren warning that a blast was imminent at Graniterock’s A.R. Wilson Quarry Tuesday came two minutes before 25,000 pounds of explosive would hammer loose a landslide of rocks and boulders. When the time came, electronic timers ignited 74 explosive charges, sending a massive cloud of stone and dirt into the air. This was followed by the roar and rumble as the rock tumbled into the quarry.

A Good RAP: Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement

Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) can be used as an aggregate and partial oil replacement in the hot recycling of asphalt paving mixtures. The most common method (conventional recycled hot mix) involves a process in which RAP is combined with virgin aggregate and new asphalt cement in a central mixing plant to produce new hot mix paving mixtures.

The County of Santa Clara released the results of a study on Thursday showing the overall health of residents from Gilroy up to Palo Alto. The report is being used to create a new Health Element of the Santa Clara County General Plan. “This report helps us better understand some of the health challenges our residents face, and gives us the tools to make improvements through the planning process,” said Supervisor Joe Simitian.

Trains are one of the nation's most environmentally friendly modes of moving freight, generating a carbon footprint that is 75 percent less than trucks. In recent decades, the railroad industry has developed new “green” technologies and environmentally responsible operating practices which have led to improved fuel efficiency. Since 1980, railroad fuel efficiency has increased 99 percent. In fact, today’s railcars can move a ton of freight 469 miles on a single gallon of fuel.
