Graniterock Hosts Third Annual Rock & Run

On Sunday September 14, 2008 Graniterock sponsored the 3rd Annual Rock & Run 5K Fun Run and 10K Run at the A.R Wilson Quarry in Aromas, California to benefit the Aromas School.

150 runners and walkers were treated to a run in the largest industrial granite quarry west of the Mississippi River. The participants began the race on a starting line between two large Caterpillar mine trucks at 8:00 am. As the runners proceeded to the face of the working quarry and the 5K split off and returned to the staging area to congratulate the rest of the finishers. The 10K proceeded up several challenging hills before turning for the finish. The event raised $8,300 for the school.

The 5K was led by returning champion Israel Parra of Aromas, California with a time of 18:41. Second and third place runners were Jacob Wilkinson and Stephen Hart, respectively. In the women’s category Valerie Perez of Aromas, California was the winner with a time of 27:09, placing second and third were Billie Boles and Erika Eberhart.

The 10K winner and two-time defending champion was Jon Erskine of Oakland, California with a time of 38:42. Second and third places were awarded to Edward Acosta and Christopher Zimmerman. In the women’s category Kari Bertrand of Gilroy, California took first place with a blistering 39:59, second and third places were Nicole Duke and Sarah Jack.

Graniterock plans on hosting this great fundraising event again next year and expect the popularity of the race to continue to grow. The course is unique each year as the face of the quarry changes. This is a fun and healthy way to raise funds for education in these challenging financial times. Check graniterock.comfor announcement of the date in 2009.
