Turning constraints into solutions: Graniterock helps deliver Stanford’s new sports stadium with innovation

Challenge
The softball stadium required filling four freestanding structural walls from the inside. Conventional compaction equipment wasn't just impractical. It was a structural failure risk. The problem surfaced early in estimating, but the solution didn't. Vance Brown trusted Graniterock to work it out in the field and that trust was well placed.
Approach
Conventional backfill equipment would have exerted enough lateral pressure to compromise the freestanding walls, so the Graniterock team rethought the entire process. Working with Griffin Soil Group, native excavated material was treated with cement and water at precise ratios, transforming it into a controlled, pumpable slurry that could be placed in measured lifts without exceeding structural limits.
Delivering that material to exact design elevations, slopes and finish grades required tight coordination between Griffin Soil Group, Conco Pumping and Graniterock's grading technology team. The teams turned what could have been a costly material disposal and import problem into an engineered reuse solution executed on site.
Result
Stanford never felt the risk because Graniterock had a solution before it became the client's problem. That's been the nature of this partnership for decades, dating back to the 1990s when Graniterock first worked with Stanford.
