Graniterock Receives Excellence In Engineering Award

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) awarded Granite Rock Company its Excellence in Engineering Management Award for 1996. Nominees were judged on their overall quality and effectiveness of engineering programs in their respective industry. Companies are nominated for this award based on the merit of their innovation and creativity. Granite Rock Company has demonstrated significant contributions to engineering management through application of innovative leadership and management research in the field of civil engineering.

According to the ASCE, Graniterock’s use of statistical process control techniques to attain material quality improvements contributes to the advancement of civil engineering management in the concrete industry.

For example, Graniterock’s concrete products consistently exceed the industry performance specifications by 100 times.

Responding to customer concern over rising trucking costs, the company developed GraniteXpress, the construction industry’s version of an automatic teller machine. Rock is loaded in a truck automatically using a credit card anytime, day or night. The implementation of the GraniteXpress Truck Loadout system demonstrates how innovative management techniques can achieve significant cost savings and provided added customer convenience.

The award was presented by Richard B. Chinn, Chairman of ASCE’s Engineering Management Group to Bruce W. Woolpert, Co-President and CEO of Granite Rock Company. The function was attended by over 150 engineers representing large firms and significant municipalities. Graniterock is a previous winner of the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and the Governor’s Golden State Quality Award.

Granite Rock Company was founded on February 14, 1900, and is one of California’s oldest participants in the construction industry. The company supplies construction building materials to markets throughout northern California and its Pavex Construction Division is a general engineering contractor. Graniterock employs more than 500 people.
