Contra Costa County's Kirker Pass truck climbing lane wins project of the year

Posted by Graniterock on Apr 15, 2021

Graniterock’s $15 million Kirker Pass truck climbing lane project was selected as the American Public Works Association’s Project of the Year 2021.

APWA’s northern California chapter recognized Contra Costa County’s Kirker Pass as the top project in the $5 million-$25 million category.

The road expansion work involved widening Kirker Pass 20 feet on a one-mile northbound stretch from the Concord Pavilion to Hess Road.

The new truck lane, constructed on an 8 percent grade, was designed to improve safety and reduce congestion through the busy corridor.

The challenging project, which kicked off in 2019 and recently wrapped up, called for 3,000 feet of 20-foot tall retaining walls built in difficult, hard rock mountainous terrain.

The culture of Graniterock’s project management team, strong work in the field and an excellent partnering relationship with Contra Costa County Public Works Department were factors in receiving this industry award.
