HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
Overview: Routes of entry are through eyes, ingestion, inhalation, and skin.

Potential Health Effects

  • Carcinogenic Status: Vinyl acetate is listed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a possible cancer causing agent.
  • Eye Contact: May cause slight irritation to eyes.
  • Skin Contact: Prolonged or repeated contact can cause irritation.
  • Inhalation: Inhalation of vapors may cause headaches or nausea.

FIRST AID MEASURES
  • Eye Contact: Immediately flood the eye with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, holding the eye open. Obtain medical attention if soreness or redness persists.
  • Skin Contact: Wash with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing. Contaminated clothing should be washed or dry-cleaned before re-use. Obtain medical attention if irritation or redness persists.
  • Inhalation: If swallowed, give two glasses of water. Consult a physician.

FIRE & EXPLOSION
  • Flash Point: >450°F
  • Extinguishing Media: Not flammable. Use appropriate extinguishing media for containers in the surrounding area.
  • Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Wear full protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazards: Dried material can burn.

ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
  • Spill Response Procedures: Contain spills immediately with inert materials such as sand or soil. Transfer liquids and inert cleanup materials to separate suitable containers for disposal. Wear appropriate protective clothing. Wear respiratory protection.
  • Preparing Waste for Disposal: No specific measures necessary.

EXPOSURE CONTROL & PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
  • Respiratory Protection: Respiratory protection if there is a risk of uncontrolled exposure to vapors. A respiratory protection program meeting OSHA 1910.134 requirements must be followed whenever workplace conditions warrant respirator use.
  • Eye Protection: Chemical splash goggles.
  • Gloves: Neoprene-type gloves.
  • Work Practices: Engineering methods to prevent or control exposure are preferred. Methods include process or personnel enclosure, mechanical ventilation (dilution and local exhaust), and control of process conditions. If engineering controls and work practices are not effective preventing or controlling exposure, then suitable personal protective equipment should be used.

HANDLING & STORAGE
  • Protective Measures During Maintenance of Contaminated Equipment: Prevent material from freezing by maintaining temperatures above 34°F. Do not store above 120°F.
  • Storage: Vinyl acetate monomer and/or acetaldehyde vapors may be evolved when product is heated during installation or placement. Lack of adequate ventilation may result in airborne levels above established exposure limits (Section 7). Monitor the workplace if ventilation is questionable.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
  • Vapor Density (air=1): <1
  • Specific Gravity: 1.0–1.2
  • Melting Point: 32°F
  • Boiling Point: 212°F
  • Solubility in Water: Dispersible
  • Vapor Pressure: 17 mm Hg @ 68°F
  • Appearance and Odor: Milky sweet liquid

STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
  • Reactivity: Stable unless heated to temperatures greater than 350°F where thermal decomposition will begin.
  • Materials & Conditions to Avoid: High temperature heating.
  • Hazardous Decomposition Products: Thermal decomposition may yield acrylic monomers and/or vinyl acetate monomer(s).

TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Chronic Toxicity:
  • Oral Lethal Dose 50% (rat): >5,000 mg/kg
  • Dermal Lethal Dose 50% (rabbit): >5,000 mg/kg
  • Skin irritation (rabbit): slight
Carcinogenicity: Vinyl acetate vapors were shown to cause tumors of the respiratory tract of laboratory rats and mice in lifetime inhalation studies at high exposure levels (>2,000 mg/m3).

Reproductive & Developmental Toxicity: No relevant studies identified. This product is not expected to cause reproductive or developmental health effects.

ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Mobility: No relevant studies identified.

Persistence & Degradability: No relevant studies identified.

Bio-accumulation: Product is not expected to bioaccumulate.

Ecotoxicity: Product is not expected to be toxic to birds, fish, invertebrates, microorganisms or plants.

DISPOSAL
Coagulate the emulsion by stepwise addition of ferric chloride and lime. Remove clear liquid and incinerate contaminated solids in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
