Roland Elected To Transportation And Public Works Commission

Longtime Resident Represents Industry


Don Roland, Business Manager for Graniterock’s Aggregate Division, was voted by the Santa Cruz City Council to serve on the Transportation and Public Works Commission. The commission advises the City Council in formulating and implementing policy which includes planning, design, installation, and maintenance of public works and transportation projects related to automotive, rail, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic within the city. The term is four years.

Mr. Roland has been with Graniterock for fifteen years and during that time he’s worked in such diverse areas as accounting, computer technology, sales, and his current position in operations. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management Economics from UC Santa Cruz. He has a keen interest in Transportation and Public Works matters, particularly as they impact residential areas of the community. His insight and experience will prove invaluable as he serves as a bridge from industry to community. Jack Leemaster, Vice President and Aggregate Division Manager for Graniterock, said, “Don’s calm and reasoned approach to problem solving will be an asset to the commission.”

Don is married to Dr. Randa Roland, a chemistry professor at UCSC. Don has an extensive record of serving the community, including serving two terms on the City of Santa Cruz’s Equal Employment Opportunity Committee, and on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County and Families In Transition.

Graniterock was founded on Valentine's Day of 1900, when its first operation, the A.R. Wilson Quarry, was opened in Aromas, and soon became a heavy engineering contractor. Its California Contractor’s License #22 demonstrates how long the Company has been in business. Plant and branch locations include Aromas, Cupertino, Felton, Hollister, Monterey Peninsula, Oakland, Redwood City, Salinas, Santa Cruz, San Jose, and South San Francisco. Graniterock’s Pavex Construction Division operates from area offices in Redwood City, San Jose, Oakland, and Watsonville, and performs large work such as highway or runway expansion projects, as well as commercial and residential projects. The Company’s Corporate Offices have been located in Watsonville since 1900.
